Keywords are the single most important factor in whether your resume passes an ATS filter. A 2025 study by Jobscan found that resumes with a 70%+ keyword match rate are 3x more likely to get an interview. Yet most candidates never check their keyword match before hitting submit.
What Are Resume Keywords?
Resume keywords are specific words and phrases that recruiters and ATS systems look for when scanning resumes. They fall into four categories:
- Hard skills — Python, AWS, Tableau, Figma, Salesforce
- Soft skills — leadership, cross-functional collaboration, stakeholder management
- Industry terms — Agile, DevOps, OKRs, design thinking, KPI
- Credentials — PMP, CPA, CFA, AWS Certified, PhD
Where to Find the Right Keywords
The best source is the job description itself. But here are 4 other places to mine for keywords:
- LinkedIn job postings for similar roles — look for repeated terms across 5-10 postings
- Company career pages — they often use specific internal terminology
- Industry reports (Gartner, Forrester) — reveals trending terms recruiters are trained to look for
- Your target company's press releases — they telegraph what they value
Hard Skills vs Soft Skills: The Right Balance
ATS systems weight hard skills more heavily (about 60-70% of the keyword score). But soft skills matter too — especially for senior roles. The ideal ratio:
- Junior/IC roles: 80% hard skills, 20% soft skills
- Senior/Lead roles: 60% hard skills, 40% soft skills
- Executive roles: 50% hard skills, 50% soft skills
5 Keyword Placement Rules That Actually Work
- Put your top 5 keywords in the summary section — this is the first thing ATS scans and the first thing recruiters read
- Weave keywords into bullet points naturally — "Led cross-functional team of 8 engineers to deliver AWS-based microservices platform" reads better than "Skills: AWS, microservices, leadership"
- Match the exact phrasing from the JD — if the JD says "project management," don't write "managed projects." ATS does exact-match scoring first.
- Don't keyword-stuff — ATS systems now detect and penalize obvious keyword stuffing. Keep it natural.
- Include both acronyms and full terms — "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" covers both match patterns
The Most Common Keyword Mistakes
- Using only acronyms — if the ATS searches for "Search Engine Optimization" and you only wrote "SEO," you miss the match
- Burying keywords in dense paragraphs — ATS parses bullet points better than walls of text
- Ignoring the "nice to have" section — these often contain the differentiator keywords that separate finalists
- Using outdated terminology — "webmaster" instead of "web developer," "personnel" instead of "HR"
